An Amtrak official says that the improvement work at New York Penn Station is on schedule.
Chief Operating Officer Scot Naparstek says that all work scheduled to be completed this week was done. He says that about 30 percent of the overall project is now finished.
One of the main areas of work is on Track 10, where new rails are being installed.
"We have started to get the track bed ready for concrete,” Naparstek says. “We put rebar in, and approximately 25 to 30 percent of the concrete work necessary to complete Track 10 is poured."
Rebar is a reinforcing mesh of steel placed inside the concrete. Once the concrete is in place, then the track can be put down.
Officials say that the old concrete and the timber ties have been removed to allow for the new materials.
Naparstek says that Amtrak has also been pleased with the flow of commuter traffic during the project.
“During the week we’ve seen good flow -- maximum being a couple minutes of delays here or there,” he says.
Naparstek says that he is appreciative of the patience commuters have been showing during this time. He assures them that the project will be completed on schedule, which is just before Labor Day.
