American Dream mega-mall set to open 15 years after groundbreaking
The giant mega-mall known as American Dream at the Meadowlands is finally expected to open in late summer – 15 years after the developers first broke ground.
The 3 million-square-foot complex, which features a mix of entertainment and retail spaces, will have more than 450 stores, restaurants, amusement parks and an indoor ski slope.
The developers say that the complex will open in August of this year.
But the history of American Dream – which broke ground in 2004 – has been mired in all sorts of New Jersey controversy. There were lawsuits and bankruptcies. Recessions and booms. It passed hands from the Mills Company to Mack Cali. Colony Capital Acquisitions and finally TripleFive, which changed the name from Xanadu to American Dream.
In the time it's taken to finish the complex, the entire One World Trade Center went from a hole in the ground to a complete skyscraper. New Jersey has seen four governors. The Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs have both broken decadeslong curses and won the World Series. Then-President George W. Bush was campaigning for his second term when developers broke ground.
But finally – after 15 years – the complex will open. Hopefully.
