A woman who was hit and killed in Midwood has been identified as 44-year-old Cherry Cayetano Sobel, and new details are raising serious questions about how it all happened.
The crash happened just before 6:40 a.m. Thursday at Ocean Avenue and Avenue O.
Officials say Sobel was crossing the street when an ambulance making a left turn hit her.
Video obtained by News 12 shows the ambulance turning onto Ocean Avenue with what sounds like sirens going. At the same time, a person steps into the street. Officials say the driver struck the woman and kept going.
She was taken to Maimonides Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Maimonides confirmed to News 12 that the ambulance involved belongs to the hospital. In a statement, the hospital said the EMT crew involved has been suspended as the investigation continues.
Police say Sobel’s home address is in Flatbush — about six avenues from where the crash happened.
A witness told News 12 that people on a city bus rushed off to try to help right after the woman was hit.
“They ran out to try and help her — on the ground,” the witness said. “The bus driver got out too and was running after the ambulance.”
Officials say no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
