An alleged gambling ring connected to the mafia was busted Thursday, delivering a swift punch to the gut of Bergen County's seedy underbelly.
The bust followed an eight-month undercover operation dubbed 'Operation Strike Out.' More than 30 people were arrested, including a reputed 'made man' from the Genovese crime family and middle men accused of handling the ring's cash.
Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli says detectives believe the ring ran its bets through a wire room in Costa Rica and moved money all over New Jersey and New York. Some of the men arrested are accused of using their jobs as a cover for the operation, including a postal employee and Yankee Stadium and Citi Field food vendor.
According to Molinelli, the ring's gambling was expansive.
"Anything you could bet on, they would handle," he says.
