As the three-day wildfire in South Jersey is dying down, the anger over it is flaring up.
The fire, that started Tuesday afternoon at the Warren Grove Gunnery Range, is still under investigation. An Air National Guard spokesman said a flare from an F-16 may have ignited the flames during a training exercise.
Many residents are angry with the Air National Guard over the incident. Some said since Tuesday was a Red Flag day at the Pine Barrens, the military should have held its training exercise another day. On Red Flag days, firefighters ask the public to use caution because dry conditions are right for a spark to spread.
The Air National Guard spokesperson said if its internal investigation proves one of its flares was to blame, the military will step up and pay all damages. The Guard is prepared to cut $25,000 checks for residents whose homes were destroyed.
Meanwhile, firefighters are still battling the blaze, though it is 70 percent contained. The rain Wednesday night helped in fighting the flames. At least five homes were completely destroyed and a dozen more were damaged. The wildfire ravaged at least 14,000 acres of the Garden State.
