The Route 36 bridge over Troutmans Creek in Long Branch is now closed as part of a bridge replacement project that the New Jersey Department of Transportation expects to complete by spring 2027.

The bridge, built in 1941 during the Roosevelt administration, is in poor condition, according to NJDOT. It received a 3 out of 9 rating on a federal scale.

Officials say the 85-year-old steel bridge, which carries more than 23,000 vehicles a day, remains structurally safe when weight limits are followed. However, significant deterioration has made replacement necessary.

The Route 36 bridge spans Troutmans Creek between Florence Avenue and Liberty Street in Long Branch.

Detours are in place and are expected to remain through approximately Memorial Day 2027 while crews replace the bridge.

Route 36 southbound detour

  • Motorists on Ocean Boulevard/Route 36 southbound will be directed to turn right onto Atlantic Avenue/CR 29.

  • Turn left onto Branchport Avenue, then return to Joline Avenue/Route 36.

Route 36 northbound detour

  • Motorists on Joline Avenue/Route 36 northbound will be directed to turn left onto Liberty Street.

  • Turn right onto Atlantic Avenue/CR 29, then return to Ocean Boulevard/Route 36.

The bridge replacement is part of a $7.9 million federally funded project.

NJDOT said the work is taking place during the off-season to avoid disruptions during the busy summer season.

The new bridge will have two travel lanes, shoulders on each side and sidewalks, similar to the existing bridge.
