With only six weeks left in the state legislative session, advocates gathered at Brooklyn Borough Hall on Friday to call for the passing of a bill to hold law enforcement accountable for unlawful conduct.
The bill proposes an end to qualified immunity, a doctrine that excuses law enforcement officers from being put on trial for unlawful conducts, including excessive and deadly force.
Advocates say qualified immunity allows law enforcement to abuse their power and exert it on people in police custody.
Among the speakers was a mother who believes her son died at the hands of correctional officers in a correctional facility in Buffalo.
State representative Harvey Epstein says this bill will allow law enforcement to be held at the same level of accountability as ordinary citizens.
News 12 is told the activists will be marching up to Albany next week to further push for the passing of this bill.
