An advocacy group says the air conditioning isn't working properly in parts of the Bergen County Jail, but the sheriff's department says it doesn't know anything about it.
New Jersey State Police superintendent Col. Patrick Callahan says he hasn't heard of it either, but that if it is true, the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management could get involved.
Attorneys for detained immigrants say their clients should be released because the heat and poor ventilation could increase the risk of coronavirus.
The Bergen County Sheriff's Department says, “No detainees/inmates have formally notified staff of high heat conditions and/or requested medical attention due to heat exhaustion in the facility."
The Legal Aid Society reacted, saying, “It is bizarre and disheartening to hear the denial of air conditioning outages from Bergen County officials, as the number of individual reports from people we represent are mounting and we formally notified the sheriff on Saturday."
