Actor Steve Guttenberg became one of film's most prolific leading men in the 1980s, with popular comedies including “Police Academy,” “Cocoon” and “Three Men And A Baby.” Now, he's sharing insights into those years in a new play that he wrote and stars in titled "Tales From The Guttenberg Bible."
Guttenberg plays himself in flashbacks and present day, along with three other actors who portray some 90 characters based on individuals who shaped Guttenberg's life and career.
"It's basically about my leaving home at 17 to go move to Hollywood to become an actor and some of my adventures," says Guttenberg.
The play is adapted from Guttenberg's memoir, "The Guttenberg Bible," with new material related to his father. Guttenberg stepped back from acting for the past several years to care for his ailing father, who died in 2022. The play is dedicated to his late father.
"Tales From The Guttenberg Bible" is a production of George Street Playhouse and is being performed at the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center through May 21.
