AAA predicts busiest holiday weekend in over a decade
This Memorial Day weekend will be the busiest in 12 years, according to AAA.
The organization says 90 percent of New Jersey residents plan to drive to their holiday getaways, even with Memorial Day gas prices at their highest since 2005. Nearly 40 million Americans are expected to venture 50 miles or more away from home this weekend.
Traffic was a slow-go Friday evening on the Garden State Parkway outside the Monmouth Service Area in Wall Township. Drivers at the rest stop urged other motorists to give themselves plenty of time to get where they need to go.
To help ease congestion, most roadway construction projects have been postponed until 6 a.m. Tuesday.
While road trips reign supreme, even more travelers are opting to ride the rails, buses or cruise ships to their destinations.
More drivers are renting cars, as well. AAA's rental bookings are 19 percent higher this holiday weekend compared to last year.
Before hitting the road, be sure to check that your car is good to go. AAA reports that 330,000 motorists will have to be rescued from flat tires and dead batteries.
