Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Gov. Phil Murphy and Rep. Tom Kean, Jr. visited Morris County Saturday morning to get updates on the I-80 sinkhole repairs.
I-80 remains closed in both directions, causing traffic and requiring detours after a third sinkhole developed days ago.
"This has been a nasty situation now for the past couple months. It's only gotten worse," said Murphy.
Subject to testing, two westbound lanes could be open within a week, while on the eastbound side, the timeline is expected to be 6-8 weeks.
"It's a massive artery that can't be shut down, so everyone is working together to figure out what solution we need to make sure we can open up this roadway again," said Duffy.
The governor said they are bringing experts in from Pennsylvania and Colorado. For them, safety is paramount for people driving on the roads and workers on the site.
"As the situation evolves, we're all assessing where we're at and what is the best response," said Duffy.
Murphy said relief to the business owners is still to be determined and Rep. Kean said they will work with the Small Business Administration to see how they can help.
"We see what happens, I live 30 minutes from here, when this shuts down, communities are shutting down, businesses are having incredible difficulty," said Duffy.
Murphy said they feel good about structures around the sinkhole after testing.
As work continues on I-80, New Jersey Transit will begin offering 50% off round trip travel from select stations on the Morris Essex train line to alleviate some pressure from the roadway. That will begin Monday, according to Murphy. He added the discount will continue while repairs are made to the road.
The mayor of Wharton and the governor suggested working from home if you are able to over the next 6-8 weeks.
