The Union County Prosecutor’s Office released the disturbing 911 calls from last month’s deadly hit-and-run crash that left two teen girls dead in Cranford.

Chaotic, panic-filled and heartbreaking are the best ways to describe what those calls to police sounded like, just moments after Maria Niotis and Isabella Salas were mowed down by a black SUV driven by another teenager.

On Sept. 29, just before 5:30 p.m., there were frantic calls after frantic calls from neighbors and onlookers on Burnside Avenue in Cranford describing what they were seeing.

"It’s at least two people. One is under a car, one over there, I don’t know. Nobody’s conscious, nobody. It’s fatal."

According to police, the teens were intentionally run over by a 17-year-old with an SUV while they were riding an e-bike.

News 12 spoke with Brent Bramnick, the Niotis family attorney, who says the court has 60 days from the day initial charges were filed to make a waiver application that the defense can rebut before the court decides whether the teen will be charged as an adult.

"If the court decides to waive, then that matter is going to be raised to the adult court and then at that point the prosecutor’s office would then have to seek an indictment," Bramnick said.

Vincent Battiloro, 17, from Garwood, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection to the hit-and-run. The teen has a virtual court appearance Wednesday for unrelated charges.
