Police say at least seven people were injured Saturday night when a backyard deck collapsed during a graduation party.
The Amato family was hosting a party for their son's college graduation when the back porch of their Hillsdale home collapsed, crashing down and injuring seven adults. Police say more than 70 emergency responders raced to the home to help and found six people with broken bones. Authorities say none of the injuries are life-threatening.
Borough officials say there were three people on the deck when it fell, including a 93-year-old man, who luckily sustained only minor injuries.
Keith Durie, a Hillsdale firefighter and building code official, says residents should check for signs of termites and decay, such as piles of sawdust or holes in the structure. Durie also says local fire departments will perform inspections at homeowners' requests.
Building inspectors are still investigating the cause of the collapse.
