A 62-year-old man was fatally shot early Saturday morning in Newark, according to the Essex County Prosecutors Office.
Officials said the shooting occurred around 3:45 a.m.
Newark police received a 911 call about a man with a gunshot wound outside a building on Lexington Street.
Responding officers found the victim identified as Jeffrey Washington, of Camden, having suffered an apparent gunshot wound to the chest.
He was taken to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:15 a.m., according to officials.
A motive behind the shooting was not immediately known as of Saturday night.
