Six Camden County teens were hospitalized Tuesday after an SUV being driven by a 16-year-old jumped a curb, hitting them and trapping one person under the vehicle.
The crash occurred just after 2 p.m. on East Gibbsboro Road in Lindenwold, police said. Officers responded to the area for a report of a motor vehicle crash involving multiple pedestrians.
When police arrived, they found a vehicle on the sidewalk with one pedestrian trapped beneath it. Officers learned that the victim and five other teens between the ages of 14 and 16 were walking on the sidewalk when the incident took place.
First responders used equipment to lift the vehicle and free the trapped teen, who was then airlifted to Cooper University Hospital. The other teens were also transported to local hospitals for treatment of their injuries. Their conditions have not yet been released.
According to Lindenwold police, the 16-year-old Lindenwold resident who was driving the SUV has been charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault and one count of joyriding. He was transported to the Camden County Juvenile Detention Center.
Police said the investigation is ongoing "as all victims continue to recover."
