Four men have been charged with murder in a mass shooting that killed three people and injured two others.
The shooting happened last month around 8:30 p.m. along Chancellor Avenue in Newark, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Officials said the victims were 10-year-old Jordan Garcia, 21-year-old Kia Mae Scott and 19-year-old Masi Rogers. Two other men survived with non-critical injuries.
The suspects are 31-year-old Almuta Thomas, 19-year-old Furquan Boykin, 26-year-old Quayon Williams-King and an unnamed 16-year-old. They face charges of murder and conspiracy. Two are also charged with theft and arson of a vehicle.
Prosecutors said the stolen and burned vehicle helped move the case forward. Investigators believe the shooting may have stemmed from an earlier robbery, but no official motive has been confirmed.
Mayor Ras Baraka said the arrests fulfill a promise to bring justice, while Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda noted homicides in Newark are at their lowest level since the 1950s, though more progress is needed.
