Ray Barrett, an Apshawa volunteer firefighter for more than 30 years, lost his life battling a fire Sunday.
Barrett, 62, collapsed while fighting a blaze in West Milford. The firefighter was then pulled out by his son, a fellow firefighter. He died after being taken to the hospital.
Fellow firefighters gathered outside the firehouse to console each other over the big loss. Barrett had spent 32 years with the department.
Homeowner Al McCormick was not in the house at the time, but was still touched by the firefighter's sacrifice.
"What can I say ? the guy's a hero," said McCormick.
