Whole Foods is warning customers about a series of data breaches that occurred in three New Jersey locations.

Customers who used credit or debit cards at restaurants located within the Whole Foods in Metuchen, Clark and Vauxhall may have had their information compromised. Customers who used grocery checkouts were not affected.

The Whole Foods breach is the latest in a series of data breaches at banks, retailers, social media sites and even credit monitoring agency Equifax.

Melissa Companick of the Better Business Bureau says that there isn’t much customers can do to protect their accounts, but says that people should try to stay a step ahead of hackers.

“What you might want to do is contact your bank, proactively get yourself a new number, if you've used an account at multiple retailers and you're worried about it,” she says.

She also suggests that people should ask their financial institution about putting security blocks on their account if they feel that their information was stolen.

Consumer experts say that people should check their bank statements and online activity often for suspicious activity.
