Three New Jersey mayors are among 44 people arrested Thursday in the state's biggest corruption case ever.
Prosecutors say the criminal actions started with an international money laundering ring that dabbled in everything from knock-off designer bags to black market kidneys. The dirty money would allegedly come into Brooklyn and New Jersey Jewish congregations, and then spread throughout the Garden State in the form of bribes and illegal donations.
Newly elected Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano, Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell and Ridgefield Mayor Anthony Suarez were all taken into custody as a result of the corruption sting. Also arrested were two Jersey Shore rabbis, assemblymen L. Harvey Smith and Daniel Van Pelt and a slew of other officials from across New Jersey.
The home and office of Joe Doria, former assembly speaker and head of the state Department of Community Affairs, was searched by agents. Doria has not been arrested, but prosecutors are looking at low-interest loans made from his agency to some of the implicated rabbis. He has since resigned from his post.
The charges range from money laundering and bribery to trafficking human body parts.
