A person has died and a major crash investigation is underway on the George Washington Bridge, forcing significant lane closures and causing major delays heading into New York City.

Authorities shut down multiple lanes Thursday morning following a fatal motor vehicle crash on the bridge. Traffic was being diverted, causing miles of backups through Fort Lee and surrounding roadways.

The Borough of Fort Lee warned drivers to avoid the area for at least six hours. In a Facebook post around 7:30 a.m., police said they had been advised of multiple lane closures into New York City related to a fatal crash and had assigned numerous officers to traffic posts across the borough in an effort to ease congestion.

"Please continue to plan accordingly and give yourself plenty of extra time when traveling today," the department wrote.

Video from the scene showed a large police presence near the bridge as the investigation continued.

Officials have released few details, and News 12 has reached out to Port Authority police for more information. Authorities have described the incident as a fatal crash investigation.

The incident is drawing added attention after the deadly shooting on the bridge earlier this week that investigators said stemmed from a possible road rage encounter.
