An off-duty police captain was struck by a vehicle Saturday night while trying to stop the theft of his father's car in Saddle Brook, police said.
Police Chief John Zotollo said the captain spotted two people with flashlights in the driveway of his father's home across the street around 11:20 p.m.
The captain ran outside as the 2011 Infiniti G37 began backing out of the driveway. The vehicle struck him, knocking him to the ground, before leaving the area, Zotollo said.
The captain was treated at a hospital for a right leg injury as a precaution and was discharged a short time later.
