First river otter spotted in The Bronx after nearly 100 years

The Wildlife Conservation Society Bronx Zoo confirmed the first river otter sighting in The Bronx in over 100 years.
The Bronx Zoo posted a photo of the animal along the Bronx River dated June 23. It was taken by a motion-activated camera set up by local scientist RJ Hawkins.
River otters used to range throughout New York’s waterways but disappeared due to pollution, habitat degradation and unregulated trapping.
Researchers say the sighting proves that decades of restoration and conservation efforts are transforming the river.
