Newark man convicted of attempted murder in 2025 outside bar shooting

A 26-year-old Newark man has been convicted of attempted murder and weapon offenses after opening fire on a man outside a local bar last summer.
Following roughly two hours of jury deliberation on Aug. 5, Daishaun Mercer was found guilty of first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault, second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun, and second-degree possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose.
The conviction stems from an early-morning altercation on July 27, 2025, outside an establishment on Academy Street in Newark. Prosecutors showed that while two individuals were fighting outside, Mercer pulled a handgun from his waistband and shot 35-year-old Dominique Horne six times.
Horne suffered severe, life-threatening injuries—including a gunshot wound to the head—and was rushed to University Hospital by responding Newark police officers.
Mercer faces a potential sentence of 30 years to life in New Jersey State Prison when he appears for sentencing on Sept. 26.
