Gov. Mikie Sherrill has signed legislation designating June 10 as "Christina Grimmie Day" in New Jersey, honoring the late singer and Marlton native who was killed in 2016.

The bipartisan measure was sponsored by state Sens. Troy Singleton and Latham Tiver.

Grimmie, a Cherokee High School graduate, rose to national prominence through YouTube before finishing in the top three on the sixth season of NBC's "The Voice."

She also released multiple albums and singles that reached the top 10 on iTunes and won the 2011 American Music Award for New Media: Best Female.

Grimmie was fatally shot by a gunman during a meet-and-greet after a concert in Orlando, Florida, on June 10, 2016.

According to the bill's sponsors, the designation recognizes Grimmie's legacy as a New Jersey artist while promoting awareness of efforts to support victims of gun violence and other unexpected tragedies.

Following her death, her family established the Christina Grimmie Foundation to assist individuals and families affected by gun violence and unexpected hardship.

The law follows the 10th anniversary of Grimmie's death, which was marked in June.
