A former Fairleigh Dickinson University basketball standout is being remembered as a mentor and role model after a deadly shooting in Harlem.
Police say 35-year-old Kinu Rochford was shot in the head Friday night at a basketball court behind 70 Lenox Ave.
Investigators say gunfire erupted around 10:23 p.m. at the park. Rochford was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Two other victims were also injured, including a 28-year-old man who was shot in the shin and a 22-year-old woman who was shot in the forearm. Both are expected to survive.
Police are continuing to search for the shooter.
Rochford starred at Fairleigh Dickinson University and was the team’s leading scorer in 2013.
Friends and community members gathered at local courts to honor his memory with candles and tributes.
“He was a mentor to the kids out here, teaching them how to play. He was a good person,” one friend said.
Fairleigh Dickinson University called Rochford’s death a devastating loss and described him as a leader during his time in Hackensack.
