A 59-year-old man was indicted Tuesday for allegedly raping a 16-year-old in an alley as she walked home.

Antonio Melendez Reyes, of El Salvador, allegedly approached the minor as she was walking on New York Avenue in Huntington on June 6. Suffolk County prosecutors say he asked for her phone number, of which she refused to give him.

He is then accused of forcing her down an alley where he sexually assaulted her.

In a desperate bid to escape, the teenager managed to break free while partially clothed, scaling a tall fence and calling 911, prosecutors said. While on the phone with authorities and evading him, Reyes allegedly continued to pursue and look for her.

Police arrived and took him into custody.

He is charged with four counts of rape, sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.

The U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customers Enforcement has lodged a detainer against him to take Reyes into custody following his prosecution.

He is due back in court on July 21 and faced up to 25 years in prison if convicted of the top count.
