Greenpoint sales slump during G Train shutdown

"It's a bit better Sunday but still 40% drop, at least from where we could be on a beautiful Sunday when people are out," said Perri Salka, the owner of Shop Small Greenpoint and Wondermart.

This weekend was the first of many planned weekend outages for the G train in Greenpoint, making for slow sales days that businesses and elected officials have been warning about since the plan was first announced.

"It's a bit better Sunday but still 40% drop, at least from where we could be on a beautiful Sunday when people are out," said Perri Salka, the owner of Shop Small Greenpoint and Wondermart.

Salka tells News 12 that many businesses are breathing a sigh of relief after a letter they wrote to the MTA caused the agency to reverse course on having two back-to-back weekends in June with no G train service.

Salka says in a letter they received from the MTA, the planned outage from June 12th to 14th, running from Friday Evening until Monday morning, was instead shifted to a weekend in July.

Businesses across the neighborhoods were feeling the impact Sunday, including the famous Radio Bakery, which, in a rare sight, had no line to get inside Sunday afternoon.

"A day like today we'd see 200 people, and now we are down to half of that," said Rich, owner of Blend Coffee Studio.

Despite the MTA running shuttles many customers in the neighborhood say they walked from Williamsburg or took the ferry from other parts of Brooklyn.

"They are running but they are not bringing the people, or tourists to the area," Salka said.
