WELCOME, KAYA! Norwalk's Maritime Aquarium welcomes new harbor seal

Kaya, an 8-year-old, fully grown female harbor seal has moved in. She came from the Aquarium of the Pacific in California as part of a collaboration known as the species survival plan. Kaya joins three other seals who call the 160,000-gallon tank at Pinniped Cove home.

Visitors of the Maritime Aquarium can see a new set of flippers in the water.

Kaya, an 8-year-old, fully grown female harbor seal has moved in.

She came from the Aquarium of the Pacific in California as part of a collaboration known as the species survival plan.

"Our seals tend to be our marquee animal," says Dylan Salamone of the Maritime Aquarium. "She's got a really pretty pattern to her, and we're really excited to have her."

Kaya joins three other seals who call the 160,000-gallon tank at Pinniped Cove home.

Salamone says she's adjusting just fine.

"The biggest thing is understanding how different zoos and aquariums collaborate together," Salamone says. "Seals are a local species here in Long Island, and we represent the Long Island Sound's ecosystem. Having Kaya here, with the rest of her seal counterparts, brings people closer to their backyard and the environment we have here in Norwalk."

You can see her up close and personal at the aquarium during live feedings every day.
