A pedestrian was killed early Sunday morning after being struck by a vehicle while walking on Route 1 in Trenton, triggering a large emergency response and a full highway shutdown.

Police said officers were positioned near the Perry Street off‑ramp around 3:16 a.m. when they witnessed a vehicle traveling in the left lane hit a person on the highway.

The driver immediately pulled over and stopped following the collision.

Emergency responders rushed the victim to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where the pedestrian was later pronounced dead.

Route 1 northbound was shut down completely due to the severity of the crash.

Authorities said the identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family members.

No charges have been announced against the driver at this time.

Detectives from the Trenton Police Fatal Crash Unit and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office were called to the scene. Officials said the investigation into why the pedestrian was on the highway is ongoing.
