The University of Bridgeport stepped in to provide a generous gift on Friday in response to a coffee shortage at a local nonprofit.

University officials donated several cases of Purple Knights Coffee to Homes for the Brave.

For over 20 years, Homes for the Brave has helped veterans who are experiencing homelessness, hunger and mental health challenges. They provide housing, meals, case management, clinical and vocational services.

The nonprofit says they rely on donations of coffee, creamer and sugar, so residents are able to enjoy a cup or two as part of their daily routine.

When their inventory was running very low for the first time in several years, staff put out a call to the community for donations.

Representatives from the school saw the nonprofit's social media posts and wanted to help.

Purple Knights Coffee was launched by UB's School of Business. According to its website, the student-run organization sources and distributes coffee and "assist farmers impacted by the economic crisis by making purchases at fair-trade prices. "

Its goal is to empower students through practical learning opportunities and hands-on experience.
