A fox found in Little Falls has tested positive for rabies, prompting a warning from township officials and the Clifton Health Department to residents who may have come into contact with the animal.
The fox was first reported to animal control on Oct. 21 near the Tulip Garden apartment complex. Multiple residents reported seeing the animal along Turnberry Road, East Main Street, Alida Street, Sindle Avenue and Montclair Avenue near Pompton Avenue.
Animal control took custody of the fox Oct. 22 and sent it for testing. The New Jersey Department of Health confirmed the positive rabies result Oct. 26.
Officials said active fox dens have been identified near the Peckman River and urged residents to keep children and small pets supervised outdoors and dogs securely leashed.
Anyone who believes they or their pet may have had contact with the fox should immediately contact the Clifton Health Department at 973-470-5760.
Health officials advised residents to avoid handling unfamiliar animals and to keep pets' rabies vaccinations up to date. Anyone bitten or potentially exposed to saliva from a rabid animal should seek immediate medical attention.
Residents are also urged to report sick or suspicious animals to animal control and not attempt to capture or handle them.
