A tire blowout sparked a fire that engulfed a New Jersey Transit bus on the New Jersey Turnpike in Newark on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for NJ Transit told News 12 that the incident happened at about 5:30 p.m. on the northbound side of the turnpike around Exit 14. The bus, operating on the 114 line from Bridgewater to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York, “experienced a tire blowout.”

“Approximately 25 customers exited the bus without injury,” NJ Transit said. “The Newark Fire Department extinguished the fire. Customers were accommodated by another bus.”

NJ Transit said an investigation is being conducted by New Jersey State Police.
