The baby boom at Adventure Aquarium continues with the arrival of three Little Blue Penguin chicks. The first hatched Feb. 2 — a male, the sixth offspring of Sheila and Spud, parents of three other penguins at the aquarium: Tater Tot (2023), Kiwi (2024) and Saquon (2025).

Maremma and Bloke are parents to the other two newborns: a female hatched Feb. 3 and a male Feb. 5. The pair also raised Lovie (2024) and Griffin (2021).

"Sheila and Spud are successful, proven parents and are once again doing a wonderful job with their chick, nicely allowing the biologists in the nest each morning to check on the chick's growth," said Jamie Becker, biologist on the aquarium's Birds and Mammals team. "Maremma and Bloke have been doing a great job taking care of two chicks and are very protective parents."

The chicks have joined the 19-member Little Blue Penguin Colony in "Little Blue Beach." All three have transitioned from parental care to a dedicated nursery area, where they will learn essential developmental skills.

Once fully grown with juvenile waterproof feathers, they will be gradually reintroduced to the colony.

Little Blue Penguins are the world's smallest species, known for slate-blue feathers and called "fairy penguins." This diurnal species is most active at daytime to avoid predators. They swim and forage along Southern Australia and New Zealand coastlines.

The hatch follows three critically endangered African Penguin chicks born in January 2026.

Adventure Aquarium staff will name the Little Blue Penguin chicks as they continue to develop, and will announce their names on the aquarium's social media channels.
