A legislative committee has approved a bill that would require all rape kits in New Jersey to be tested if survivors authorize testing.
The full Assembly has voted to approve a bill to require a tracking system for kits.

The legislation comes after a Kane in Your Corner investigation exposed an extensive backlog of untested kits in New Jersey.
New Jersey has been one of just four states that allowed prosecutors to choose whether or not to test a rape kit, even if a survivor requested testing.
Since the Kane in Your Corner investigation aired, New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin ordered law enforcement to test every kit.
Advocates say it's crucial for that order to be put into law.
