Gov.-Elect Mikie Sherrill stopped in Bergen County on Wednesday as part of a statewide tour to hear from future constituents before she's sworn in.

Sherrill's stop in Bergen County is one of the first on her diner tour of the Garden State.

"These are the bread-and-butter people of Bergen County and of New Jersey," said Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco.

Almost every booth at Matthew's Diner in Waldwick was full as Sherrill made her way from table to table.

One resident told News 12 the main issue she wanted Sherrill to address was "how prices are going to come down, if she's able to even bring prices down."

Sherrill said she plans to address high costs at the federal level but also on the state level, like declaring a state of emergency on utility costs.

"What I've heard from too many people is the sense that the government is far away and doesn't understand what is happening to families," Sherrill said. "So, in declaring a state of emergency, I'm signaling to people, 'I get it. I'm addressing what's keeping you up at night, and you can hold me accountable.'"

Sherrill chose to stop in a town where she won the governorship by less than 100 votes despite winning the county by almost 10 percentage points.

"There are going to be issues we don't agree on. We all know that, but what I'm interested in is how we can bring people together on those issues that we all want to address," Sherrill said.
