A man from Somerset County has been convicted of aggravated assault after hitting a police officer with his car during an arrest in Manville.

Brian Niziolek, 39, of Basking Ridge was pulled over in a stolen car two years ago, prosecutors said. When officers got out of their cruiser, Niziolek sped toward them, hit one officer, and then drove off.

The chase ended when Niziolek crashed into a car and then into a home. He ran off on foot, breaking through a basement window of an apartment building on Brooks Boulevard.

Officers arrested him after finding him hiding in a crawl space. Police said he threatened officers on scene.

Inside the car, police found an illegal semi-automatic assault weapon, high-capacity magazines, and a bulletproof vest. Sentencing is scheduled for January.
