A state grand jury voted not to file criminal charges against a state trooper involved in a fatal encounter in Knowlton Township with a Pennsylvania man.

Officials say that the man matched the description of a suspect involved in a shooting in February 2024. Police body camera video captured the encounter between several New Jersey state troopers and 38-year-old Anthony Avitable.

Police say that Avitable was at his friend’s home when an argument broke out between Avitable, his friend and his friend’s wife. They say Avitable got a shotgun and started shooting the couple, killing the wife.

State troopers caught up with Avitable near Route 46 and Interstate 80. They tackled and handcuffed him.

Officials say Avitable suffered a medical episode while in custody. They say troopers attempted CPR, but Avitable was pronounced dead at the hospital.
