A boil water advisory in part of Passaic County remains in place as the Passaic Valley Water Commission wraps up a large-scale system flushing program.

PVWC officials say they anticipate the flushing to be complete by Friday evening.

This flushing program is due to a major water main break that occurred in Paterson on Aug. 8 near Hinchliffe Stadium. It has impacted tens of thousands of people in Paterson, Prospect Park, Haledon and North Haledon.

“Flushing is a critical step toward improving water quality and ultimately lifting the Boil Water Advisory…During flushing, customers may experience temporary changes in water pressure or discoloration, which should clear after running cold water for several minutes,” PVWC officials wrote in a statement.

The advisory has already been lifted for 77,000 Paterson customers, “specifically Broadway and all streets south of Broadway, east of Spruce Street, and west of Route 20.”

The advisory remains in place for all other Paterson customers, as well as customers in Prospect Park. Customers served by the Manchester Utilities Authority in Haledon and North Haledon are also under the advisory.

PVWC officials also say that crews are still repairing a 42-inch water main that ruptured last weekend near North First and Arch streets in Paterson. They say repairs are expected to be complete in the next two weeks.
