A woman crossing train tracks on foot in Hackensack was hit and killed by a New Jersey Transit train Thursday morning, according to officials.

The incident took place just before 10 a.m. and involved a train along the Pascack Valley Line.

After the incident, the train came to a stop and wouldn’t move for the next 2 ½ hours until a police investigation was completed.

The pedestrian strike took place close to the Essex Street Station, along Railroad Avenue. It’s an area where people regularly cross the tracks on foot, as the train tracks are not bordered by any fencing.

News 12 spoke with a man who witnessed the accident.

“I took that right there. The train zipped through and about 50 feet away. I witnessed a horrible thing. I saw the body fly and then I ran over there. I was the first one there, I stopped my car and ran up, and I tried to give her CPR, but you could tell she was dead,” said John Maziot.

New Jersey Transit Police are investigating why the woman was crossing the tracks as the train was approaching.

The victim’s name has not been released.

Service on the Pascack Valley Line was suspended until 1 p.m.
