Overnight fire in Trenton damages homes, displaces residents

Two homes on Boudinot Street were left uninhabitable by the fire.
Trenton police officers were patrolling in the area at 1:10 a.m. when they were flagged down by an individual reporting a house fire on the first block of Boudinot Street.
When officers arrived at the home, they saw the second floor of the home engulfed in flames. The officers called for assistance and helped residents evacuate. Residents from neighboring homes were also evacuated, including pets.
Five individuals were taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center. One of the victims, a 64-year-old male, was intubated but is in stable condition. He also suffered burns to his face and showed signs of soot exposure.
Six adult residents were displaced from the home that caught on fire.
Police said the preliminary investigation has not revealed any indication of criminality.
Residents came back today to see the damage and collect belongings. The homeowner next door was at work when the fire began.
"I got a phone call saying a fire started next door and they heard a loud explosion," said Tyreka Thomas.
Thomas ran home but was stopped by the emergency response.
"I really couldn't get up here. I did contact my son and my brother and sister to see where they were at, because the cops blocked off the street, because of how bad the fire was," said Thomas.
The fire damage is visible on the home next door. A satellite dish is melted to the home, and the top floor is charred inside and out.
The damage carries over into her home. She's lived there with her family for 15 years.
"Damaged, a lot of water damage," said Thomas.
She said the ceiling is down in the attic, and the water damage continues down all three floors of the home.
Thomas is not sure what the future of the home will be.
"Hopefully not major damage, won't know until they start working on the house," said Thomas.
