New Brunswick has officially put rules in place to stop smoking in several public places.

A new ordinance officially bans smoking in parks and some other public places. This means cigarettes, cigars, vapes and marijuana.

Officials say the rule also means smoking is prohibited at any scheduled public event — this includes farmers markets, parades, concerts and festivals.

The change comes as New Brunswick City Council aims to promote public health and prevent secondhand smoke.

Those disobeying the ordinance can be fine up to $500 for their first offense and up to $1,000 for further offenses.
