New Jersey residents have a favorite convenience store, one that is treasured more than all the others.

A Monmouth University poll released on Wednesday asked state residents which convenience store is their favorite: Wawa, 7-Eleven, QuickChek or another store?

Wawa, which marked its 60th anniversary on Tuesday, blew the other stores out the competition receiving 50% of the votes.

Wawa has nearly 300 stores in the Garden State. The Pennsylvania-based chain is easily the favorite convenience stop in the southern part of the state, where it has had a foothold since its earliest days, with 8 in 10 South Jersey residents choosing it as their favorite, according to the poll. It’s also the top convenience store pick of most Central Jersey residents with 61% of votes.

In North Jersey, the poll says Wawa was chosen as the favorite (31%) over 7-Eleven (24%).

So much for free Slurpee Day.

However, the Monmouth University poll says the close results in North Jersey are driven by a large split in urban and suburban opinion there. In the northern region’s cities and urban centers, the poll says 7-Eleven takes the top spot for convenience purchases with 38%, followed by Wawa (25%) and QuickChek (19%). In suburban North Jersey, Wawa has the edge with 34% over QuickChek (20%) and 7-Eleven (15%).

Wawa and 7-Eleven have at least twice as many locations in New Jersey as QuickChek, according to published reports.

Monmouth University Polling Institute asked 801 New Jersey adults their favorite convenience store:

  • 7-Eleven: 15%

  • QuickChek: 14%

  • Wawa: 50%

  • Something else: 10%

  • None: 8%

  • Don’t know: 2%
