Union County residents are asking people to slow down after an 8-year-old was hit by a car in Kenilworth.

The boy was taken to the hospital after being hit by a car at South Michigan Avenue and Newark Avenue. It happened on Halloween night around 7 p.m.

Officials say the child’s injuries were minor, but neighbors tell News 12 New Jersey that it is not a surprise that this happened on this stretch of roadway.

Kenilworth police say the child was hit while on the crosswalk with his mother. They say the driver stayed on scene and cooperated with police.

Data shows that Union County is listed as the fourth-highest county for injury crashes in the state from 2001 to 2020.

The busy intersection is also near a park, several bus stops and close to neighborhood schools.
