The nurses strike at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital is in its sixth day as the nurses union fights for better working conditions.

A spokesperson for the hospital tells News 12 New Jersey that the union rejected a contract proposal offered on Wednesday.

“United Steel Workers 4-200, the union which represents RWJUH nurses, today formally rejected the hospital's latest offer that would have established clearly defined staffing guidelines, further bolstered nurses' highest-in-the-state salaries and ensured zero increase in employee health contributions for a fourth consecutive year. Unfortunately, the union instead submitted a counterproposal well in excess of its last proposal,” the spokesperson wrote in a statement.

The hospital says the new proposal is under review.

The nurses went on strike on Aug. 4. They are calling for better staffing-to-patient ratios.
RWJ University Hospital remains open and fully operational, according to hospital officials.
