Powerful thunderstorms tore through New Jersey Tuesday afternoon causing damage, power outages and left parts of the state underwater.

Surveillance video from a Kenilworth home caught the aftermath of a tree falling on top of a truck. Luckily no injuries were reported.

“This is pretty crazy. When Irene hit there was a lot of tree damage but this…a guy driving down the street getting hit that’s a lot,” says Kenilworth resident Daniel Flacks.

In Elizabeth, flash flooding forced street closures as flood waters rose. Firefighters carried one woman to safety. Some cars parked along the street had water up to their tires.

“It floods every time it rains like this, and people be losing their property, their cars and all kinds of stuff,” says Mr. Howard, of Elizabeth.

Mr. Howard criticized the city of Elizabeth for building a rain garden that doesn’t seem to work.

“They built this so-called thing that’s supposed to pick up water with tanks in the ground and it does nothing,” he says.

Flooding and damage were reported all over the state.

The storms also left thousands of people without power, with more than 22,000 outages reported at the peak of the storm.

Newark Liberty International Airport was also reporting hundreds of flights were delayed or canceled.

The storms mostly moved out around 8 p.m. and the weather was expected to remain dry for the overnight hours.
