The National Weather Service has teams out in various areas of New Jersey to assess the damage caused by powerful storms that tore across the state Monday afternoon and evening.

The agency already confirmed that a tornado touched down in Bernardsville. Teams are also assessing damage elsewhere in Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren counties.

These areas were pelted with heavy rain and pea-sized hail on Monday. The storms only lasted a few minutes before traveling north. Some of those clouds had rotation within them, so the National Weather Service will be looking for evidence of tornadoes.

The storms also left damage in parts of Morris County. The Cruz family lives on New Street in Dover. A large tree fell, taking out two of their cars parked in the driveway.

“It’s been standing strong for so many years, and then we get this one, windy storm and it completely knocks down,” says Ashley Cruz. “It’s incredible.

Cruz says that the tree fell around 3:30 p.m. while she was upstairs in the home.

"I hear and feel a shake in the home, and next thing you know I hear my mother screaming. I went downstairs and I see both of our cars demolished by the huge tree in our backyard,” Cruz says.

Downtown Dover also had some minor flooding, causing some road closures. The water has receded, but the Rockaway River remained high on Tuesday.

New Jersey also saw thousands of power outages and hundreds of flight delays.

Another round of storms was expected Tuesday afternoon and evening.
