The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down in Somerset County during Monday’s stormy weather.

The tornado touched down in Bernardsville. A survey team was out in the area on Tuesday looking at the damage and confirmed that it was caused by a tornado.

It has been more than 24 hours since the storm and some roads are still closed. The twister uprooted multiple trees and knocked over some power lines.

The storm split some of the trees in half and brought about heavy rain that didn’t seem to let up.

“It was so blinding. I was in the house and you couldn’t see outside,” says resident Catherine Reddi. “It was like a wave hit the house.”

Crews were working Tuesday afternoon to clean the damage. On Anderson Hill Road, a tree came down, damaging a home. Up the street, workers tried to untangle a mess of powerlines. Cars were hastily patched up - a short-term fix while the owners assess the damage.

Some of the power outages are still being repaired. Officials said that about 3,500 people were without power in the town Monday night – about 98% of the town.

“You could see immediately there were like trees down, power went out. It was just crazy,” Reddi says.

Details about the path length and width of the tornado were not immediately available.
