More and more beach towns in New Jersey have put curfews into place this summer to stop rowdy and sometimes destructive behavior.

Parents and kids should pay attention to the regulations at any beach they attend because they vary. Those who violate the rules could receive a citation.

In recent years, the curfews have been a response to complaints from neighbors and large groups of teens overwhelming some areas late at night.

Large gatherings in Seaside Heights prompted a police response during Memorial Day weekend. In Lavallette and Ortley Beach, massive crowds appeared a year ago on warm season holiday weekends. Residents wanted immediate change.

A curfew in Lavallette began in June. There are signs along Route 35 alerting visitors and locals about the new rules now in place.

Some of the rules at beaches go a step further for people under the age of 18 - banning backpacks and closing beaches after sundown.

Here are some specific rules to know at Jersey Shore beaches:

  • Lavallette's curfew went in place June 1 and is in place from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

  • Ocean City's curfew began June 15 - minors can't be out after 11 p.m. Backpacks are banned after 8 p.m.

  • At Toms River beach communities, there are similar rules also in place.

  • Exceptions to the rules: If a minor is traveling to or from work, coming or going from religious gatherings, or in the presence of an adult.

To find out if there are restrictions in the town you're visiting, visit the local website and search “curfew ordinances.”
