The
120th New Jersey State Golf Association “Amateur Championship” is underway at Essex Fells
Country Club.
More than 100 of the state's
best amateur golfers are competing in this year's prestigious tournament.
Competitors range in age from 14 to over 60.
"When
you can say that you're the best of something, it's a wonderful thing and when
you can say you're the best in the state, it's that much more special,
especially on the amateur level, there's so many great players in the state of
New Jersey,” says Kevin Purcell, NJSGA
executive director.
There's
also a large number of local college players in the field, including reigning state
amateur champion Austin Devereux from Rider University.
"All
these guys out here have a chance of winning,” says Devereux. “It's a very, very difficult
tournament to win. Still even thinking about it last year, it's crazy to me
that I won this event."
The event
runs through Thursday.
