A 12-year-old girl was fatally struck by an NJ Transit train Tuesday afternoon in Middlesex County.
The incident occurred in the Avenel section of Woodbridge. NJ Transit officials said the girl was playing on the tracks with her friends when she was struck. According to NJ Transit representatives, the girl?s friends were able to get out of the train?s way and called 911 after the incident.
The victim was a seventh-grader at Avenel Middle School.
The train was traveling to Bayhead from Hoboken. The incident and police investigation caused 15 to 20 minute delays on the North Jersey Coast Line. NJ Transit said NJCL service is now running on or close to schedule.
